(WGTD)---A Kenosha bar and restaurant that's been under fire for several years is disputing part of the police department's account of a fatal shooting that occurred near the tavern early Sunday morning.
A 25-year-old Illinois man, Deyonn Williams, was shot at the corner of 49th St. and 8th Ave., about a block east of the Red Zone Sports Bar and Grill. Williams was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police said they were summoned to the bar on a report of an argument involving between 30 and 40 people in the bar's parking lot. As the crowd began to disperse, gunshots were heard, and police discovered the victim.
The Red Zone disputes the contention that an unruly crowd had formed.
Manager Duvall Coates said the incident began when two men were escorted out of the bar for arguing, then were walked across the street.
Coates said he and a bouncer tried to direct a responding squad car to follow them, but the officer continued on, made a U-turn, then parked in front of the bar on Sheridan.
In the release, Coates implied that Williams' death might've been prevented if the squad had taken their cue. It's not clear whether the victim was one of the two men who were kicked out of the bar.
A police department spokesman stood by his original release, saying those were the details that he'd been given.
The Red Zone has been a near constant source of trouble for residents of the area. Earlier this year, the bar lost its cabaret license but retained its liquor license.
