Feb. 6, 2025 11:30a

(WGTD)---Racine County Sheriff's deputies and motorists a like scrambled to avoid injury on ice-glazed I-94 Wednesday night.

Just before 10, freezing rain started to make driving treacherous. Over 20 accidents occurred, leading to multiple spin-outs, jack-knifed semis and four damaged squad cars, according to a release from the department.

Two deputies were injured. One officer was hurt pulling a sergeant over the center wall as a van spun out of control toward them. Another sergeant injured his knee when he slipped and fell on the icy road.

The most significant injury was a broken leg sustained by a driver who crashed into the rear of a squad car.

The interstate through Racine County was closed for nearly four hours.

The news release indicates that the sheriff's department notified the county's Public Works Dept. as soon as the freezing rain hit.
