(WGTD)---The new director of the Racine Public Library has strong roots in the institution.
Following graduation from Carthage College 18 years ago, Demske, in search of a job to pay the bills, applied for a part-time library job shelving books. He was hired.
From there, Demske rose through the ranks. He was deputy director when appointed interim director upon the resignation last year of Angela Zimmermann. “Interim” was removed from the title last month upon a vote of the Library Board.
"I always say that I'm a living, breathing library success story," he said.
Speaking on WGTD’s Morning Show, Demske recounted the ways the library has changed over the years. "The library still acts as a pillar of education in the community," he said. "What a lot of people back then wouldn't have imagined about libraries now is it's also the living room of the community. It's not just a repository of information. But (now) it's treated as a community gathering space."
Recent remodeling has allowed the library to expand and enhance its services. Pointing to the bookmobile and the home delivery of materials, Demske noted that accessibility remains key to the library’s operation.
