Man Shoots at Backyard Intruder; Now Faces Charges

Jan. 29, 2025 9:45p

(WGTD)---A Racine man is facing a felony charge of endangering safety after he fired a gun at somebody who'd been poking around his yard.

According to the criminal complaint, 34-year-old Jesus Cabrera of 1317 St. Patrick St. was alerted several nights ago by a security camera. Cabrera then armed himself, swung open the door, and fired at a man wearing a ski mask who'd been standing near his vehicle. The man fled, with Cabrera firing additional shots.

Cabrera told police he thought he was within his rights under the 'Castle Doctrine', but the law only allows individuals to use force to defend themselves from an intruder inside their home.

The complaint notes that the fired shots were in a direct line with other houses in the neighborhood.

No one was injured in the incident, but Cabrera, who was released on a signature bond, managed to shoot out a window in his own vehicle.
