KTEC High School Proposed for Site Near Gateway Technical College

Aug. 18, 2023 noon; Edits made at 2:45p to reflect the separation between KTEC High School and KUSD

(WGTD)---A private school school that currently leases space is looking to build.

The Kenosha School of Technology Enhanced Curriculum or KTEC for short is proposing to construct a 9-12 high school just east of Gateway's Kenosha campus on 30th Ave. The site is currently farmland.

The proposal is expected to be discussed by the city's Plan Commission Thursday evening.

KTEC currently operates a pair of semi-autonomous K-8 charter schools within the Kenosha Unified School District. But the high school is not affiliated with KUSD, according to the school district.

KTEC High school received its authorization to operate from an arm of the UW system, according to previous reporting by WGTD.

According to Plan Commission documents, the new school would enroll as many as 600 students and employee 25 faculty.

The proposed location was selected in part because of its proximity to Gateway, which could lead to a greater number of students participating in Gateway's dual enrollment program.

City staff is expressing some concern over parking and traffic flow. As it stands, the school would have only one entrance and exit and just 74 student parking stalls.

The city reports that residents to the south of the site have expressed concerns over drainage and whether their streets would be used for overflow parking.

The KTEC high school is just one-year old. It's currently renting space in the former St. Mary's Catholic School.
