Racine Council Meeting Lacks Quorum; Veto Override Vote Among the Items Postponed

Mar. 18, 2025 9:45p

(WGTD)---The Racine City Council failed to get a quorum at its regularly-scheduled meeting Tuesday night.

Because only six of the council’s 14 members showed up on time, Mayor Cory Mason had to cancel the session, even though the agenda was jam-packed with items that drew a full gallery of citizens.

Unlike last fall when a boycott of council meetings by a minority of council members ground business to a halt, Tuesday night's shortage of alders did not appear to be planned.

The council members who were present included Melissa Kaprelian, Dave Mack, Sam Pete, Mary Land, Maurice Horton and Marlo Harmon. Eight members were absent. One council seat is vacant due to the death of Mollie Jones.

A top item on the agenda was a vote on whether to override a mayoral veto of some controversial council procedural changes.
