Kenosha Streetcar Does the Splits; Damage But No Injuries

Updated at 2p to reflect status of service and uncertainty over accident details

Kenosha---A one-vehicle streetcar accident near the transit station Saturday morning damaged some equipment but caused no injuries.

The incident occurred as the streetcar approached a switch near the "barn" where the cars are stored.

On-scene Kenosha Transit personnel declined to talk to a reporter. But it appeared that one set of wheels on the streetcar went one way while the other went another way. The car, which remained upright and on the tracks, came to rest against a utility pole, knocking it off kilter. An exterior section on the streetcar was bent and scraped.

A police officer on scene said the streetcar--save for the driver--was empty at the time. There were no injuries.

After assessing the damage, transit workers used a small utility truck to first push the front set of wheels back onto the main track. Then they reversed direction and pulled the car over the switch and back to the shed.

Just last month, the two-mile long streetcar loop was closed for a few days for maintenance to the track and switches.

Within hours after Saturday's accident, the service was back in business, but with a different streetcar. The city has several that it swaps in and out of service.
