Kenosha Office Building Near Gateway Could be Converted Into Apartments

(WGTD)---A developer has a plan to turn an under-utilized tract of land near Gateway Technical College in Kenosha into apartments, suitable for students.

The proposal—from Land Quest of Kenosha—goes before the city’s Plan Commission this Thursday.

Right now, an empty office building with a large, adjacent parking lot is all that sits on the site, tucked behind the Gateway Café on 30th Ave.

Land Quest wants to turn the two-story building into 42 apartments, then build four smaller buildings in the parking lot that would house another 28 units. The apartment sizes would range from studio to two-bedroom, and would be leased at market rates.

This will be the second time the developer will have gone before the Plan Commission with a proposal for the property. The initial proposal made last year dealt with just the office building, and didn’t include the four smaller buildings. In the face of opposition from some of the neighbors, the proposal was eventually withdrawn before the Commission had a chance to act on it. Back then, a representative of Gateway Technical College spoke in favor of the plan, saying the apartments would be ideal for students.
