(WGTD)---Although the Kenosha Literacy Council still sees a majority of its learners as having Hispanic backgrounds, the list of countries has become more diverse in recent months, according to Council Director Cheryl Hernandez. "About 60% of our students are from Spanish-speaking countries, but we've definitely seen a lot more diversity recently," Hernandez said on a recent edition of Education Matters. "Many students have come from Ukraine. We've also had some students from Afghanistan."
The Council serves about 500 adult learners a year with the help of 200 volunteers. Its students are far from faceless and nameless. For the past 21 years, the Council has published profiles of some of the students written by the students themselves.
Some find the experience to be therapeutic as was the case with a Ukrainian refugee and her daughter, Hernandez said.
The Literacy Council offers several different tracks for its students, all dependent on the learner’s goals and English-language proficiency levels.
