Named one of the people transforming America by Politico, Dr. Carol Anderson joined host Troy McDonald on Saturday’s edition of Generation Now; WGTD’s show for Millennials and Gen Z. Anderson, a New York Times Best-selling author, has been featured on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, and countless other programs and outlets.
The two discussed Anderson’s latest book “One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression is Destroying Our Democracy.” In it, Anderson claims that former Governor Scott Walker and republican dominated state governments across the country, intentionally stop people of color from voting when instituting voter id laws. Walker instituted Wisconsin's voter id law in 2011. Simultaneously, Walker reduced hours for the Department of Motor Vehicles in Milwaukee County; one of the only places where people obtain a qualifying ID. 70 percent of the black population in Wisconsin live in Milwaukee County.
Anderson claims that this is “White Rage.” Rage felt more palpable as blacks and minorities rise the economic ladder in America. “In this nation we are so focused on the flames that we miss the kindling, and the kindling (of White Rage) is the policies systemically put in place to undermine the advancement of African Americans as they achieve their basic human rights.”
Anderson also shared how she believes millennials can work with older generations to advance the civil rights movement in the 21st century.
Dr. Carol Anderson is the current Charles Howard Candler Professor of African American Studies at Emory University. Her books “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of our Nation’s Divide,” and “One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression is Destroying Our Democracy” are available where ever books are sold.
