Area Building Projects Planned

Oct. 12, 2024 9p

(WGTD)---Construction projects are on the drawing board for an area high school, a day care and a college.

The Somers Plan Commission will be reviewing plans put forth recently by Shoreland Lutheran High School. While nothing is final, the school is looking at a $15 million expansion that would include eight new classrooms, a new gym and fitness center and a new music room. The plan also calls for creating a new main entry. Shoreland President Paul Scriber tells WGTD that efforts remain underway to complete the financing package. The school currently has 443 students with a waiting list.

A building project is also on the horizon at Carthage College. The school will be receiving a recently-approved $1.3 million state grant to expand its nursing labs and simulation facilities to help meet the area’s health-care needs. In the past three years, Carthage has seen a 29% enrollment increase in its Bachelor of Science Nursing program, from 280 students in the 2022-23 school year to 361 this year. The additional space will also enable Carthage to expand its new Certified Nurse Aide program.

In Mt. Pleasant,  a daycare run by Safe Haven is looking to relocate to a new building. The Building Commission recently approved an $830,000 grant for the non-profit’s Academy Early Learning Center, which is currently located on Spring St. in Mt. Pleasant. Safe Haven C-E-O Jeanette Brown tells WGTD that the non-profit hopes to build a new $4 to $5 million facility at a new location. Before that happens, though, additional funding needs to be secured. Brown says the area lacks high-quality day care.

The Commission also decided to chip in funding for the new Uptown Children’s Library in Kenosha. The $160,000 appropriation will be rolled in to cover the $1.7 million cost of the build-out on the first floor of Uptown Lofts on 22nd Ave. About half of the project’s cost is being covered by federal COVID relief dollars.
