Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave and Segue Racine have announced a temporary winter homeless shelter site on the second floor of the former Lincoln Lutheran building, on Domanik Drive, which currently houses United Way of Racine County. This shelter would accept people struggling with drug & alcohol related issues......something Racine's HALO facility does not. Speaking to the county's Finance & Human Resource Committee---Delagrave said a $40-thousand dollar grant to Segue will cover rent and utilities from November through March, and take care of a critical need because past available hotel vouchers are gone. Also, a long term, plan isn't ready yet. 10 to 30 homeless people could be housed each night, according to Delagrave, noting it's a better and less costly alternative The Racine County Board's Finance and Human Resources Committee supports the one-time grant to Segue for the short-term lease of the site, with possible full board approval later this month. A neighborhood watch meeting near the site will be held this Saturday at 10am. Segue Racine had originally proposed a shelter in a former tavern near Julian Thomas School....a plan dropped after complaints from the community. (Photo credit: Racine Journal Times)
