A recount has affirmed last Tuesday's election result that a nearly $10 million facilities expansion and renovation plan for Waterford Union High School received a majority of the votes cast. District officials will proceed with plans to implement a host of improvements, including updating classrooms and labs, expanding parking, replacing HVAC systems and replacing the roof.
The margin of victory went from the initial reporting of three votes to five, according to District Superintendent Keith Brandstetter.
During the eight-hour long recount process, the vote totals changed slightly several times as the totals were checked and re-checked and ballots more closely examined.
At one point during the day, it appeared that a ballot was missing. On the advice of County Clerk Wendy Christensen, a municipality checked one of their voting machines and the ballot turned up stuck inside.
The recount was conducted at the Racine County Courthouse.
The 9-12 high school has a current enrollment of 1,065.
Even with the new spending authorized by the referendum, property taxes for school purposes are expected to go down because previous debts have been retired.
