Vigil Held for Racine Homicide Victim

July 28, 2019 9p

(WGTD)---A short vigil was held Sunday evening in a nervous neighborhood in Racine for a resident who was shot to death two weekends ago.

39-year-old Vontrell Turner died of a gunshot wound to his head near his home in the 19-hundred block of Mead Street. At last report police are still looking for the gunman.

About 50 people gathered on a sidewalk, including several of Turner’s children. The crowd seemed to be slow to gather and quick to disperse. Three police officers wearing bullet proof vests were present.

Speaking to reporters, neighbor Kerstal Wyatt described Turner as a good friend and a stay-at-home-dad who was fun to be around. "He was a good person," Wyatt said. "He's going to be missed."

Wyatt said Turner had lived across the street from him for about six years. The neighborhood, he says, hasn’t gotten any better. "I've been here for 30 years. It's just gotten worse and worse," he said. "Everybody has to try to come together and stop this crazy killing. It ain't worth it."

Several people at the vigil wore tee shirts with Turner’s photo.
