Pair of High-Speed Chases on I-94 End in Charges

July 29, 2024 9p

(WGTD)---A pair of high-speed law enforcement pursuits on I-94 in Kenosha and Racine counties has resulted in charges against the drivers.

In Kenosha, a bond of $15,000 was set Monday for 25-year-old Damarious Nelson of Milwaukee.

Last Thursday the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department was notified by law enforcement in Lake County that one of its helicopters was tracking two stolen vehicles.

A Pleasant Prairie police officer spotted one of the vehicles—a high-priced Infinity—traveled at well over 110 miles per hour. The officer gave chase but broke it off after his speed reached 130 miles per hour.

Minutes later, the Infinity crashed in Racine County and the driver—Nelson—was taken to a hospital for treatment then transferred to jail.

Charges include five counts of endangering safety as Nelson allegedly caused a crash involving several vehicles.

According to online state Department of Corrections records, Nelson was released from prison about a year and a half ago after having served time for car theft and fleeing.

In the second case, another man from Milwaukee, 22-year-old Martrell Stewart, was arrested after leading law enforcement on a chase through Racine County and southern Milwaukee County on the same day.

A Caledonia police officer successfully deployed a tire deflation device and the Elantra came to a stop on the Ryan Rd. exit ramp in Oak Creek.

A passenger in the vehicle was also taken into custody on a warrant for car theft.

Vehicles capable of high speeds aren’t the only ones involved in chases.

In the City of Racine over the weekend, a 22-year-old man on an off-road A-T-V initially spotted in the 700 blk. of Park Ave. eluded officers.

Officers quickly located an A-T-V matching the description of the one being chased as well as the driver. Adaire Norphlet was arrested after a short foot chase.
