Five Declared KSB Candidates Emerge Before Filing Deadline; KUSD Announces Referendum Town Halls

Jan. 6, 2025 9:55p

(WGTD)---The list of candidates for a pair of seats on the Kenosha School Board has grown. If all of the candidates return nomination papers with the required number of signatures by Tuesday night's deadline, then a primary will be needed.

The latest to file ‘declared candidate’ paperwork are Sheb Muhammad and Andreas Mamalakis. They join Valerie Kretchmer, Carl Bryan and Rebecca Stevens. Stevens is an incumbent.

The second incumbent whose term expires this spring is Kristine Schmaling. Schmaling has decided against re-election.

A school board primary—if one is needed—would be held February 18th.

Among other races and issues, primary ballots in Kenosha Unified will include an operational referendum question.

The district will ask voters to approve a $23 million per year increase in the levy limit for the next five years.

The extra money would allow the district to protect class sizes, fund state-mandated programs and improve school security, among other things.

District officials say state aid hasn’t kept up with inflation.

A series of four town hall meetings to explore the district’s financial challenges and the proposed referendum will begin this week with a session Thursday evening at Bradford High School. The meeting starts at 5:30.
