(WGTD)---A L-G-B-T-Q rights advocacy group says it's "disheartened" by the decision of Kenosha County Executive Samantha Kerkman not to fly the Rainbow Pride flag in front of the Kenosha County Courthouse during June, Pride Month.
Kerkman recently issued an executive order that rescinded a previous order made by former County Executive Jim Kreuser. In 2021, Kreuser ordered that the Rainbow flag be displayed with other flags at the courthouse. At the time, Kreuser said he wanted to celebrate the L-G-B-T-Q community and the battles it has forged for equality and social acceptance.
The flag was donated by Kenosha Pride.
In a news release, the non-profit urged residents to contact Kerkman and their county board supervisors. "Year after year, Kenosha has ranked last in the state on the Municipal Equality Index and actions like this show the LGBTQ+ community that Kenosha does not welcome them," the release said.
Kerkman's order states that the only flags that'll be allowed to fly on county property are the U.S, state and county flags. Flags of the United States branches of military service and the POW-MIA flag are optional. The purpose and goal of this order is to create a clear and consistent policy across county facilities," Kerkman said in a news release.
"This decision was made in advance of Memorial Day, reflecting on the meaning of the flags that the county flies year-round. The objective is not to distract from that basic message, honoring our country, our state, our county, and those who have served our nation."
A spokesman for the county said Kenosha Pride can have its flag back if it so desires.
