Mountain Lion Purportedly Sighted in Kenosha County

Town of Wheatland---Is it the real thing or a case of mistaken identity?

Kenosha County Sheriff Dave Beth is taking no chances: He's sounding the alarm following purported sightings Tuesday morning of a cougar in the northwest portion of the county.

Two people who live just north of Highway 50 and east of the Kenosha/Walworth county line reported seeing what appeared to be a mountain lion emerge from a wood line before retreating back into the woods. Coincidence or not, one of the residents reported that she's missing several chickens.

The DNR was dispatched to the area to look for evidence.

According to the DNR's web site, cougar sightings in northern Wisconsin in recent years have been verified.

More common, however, are sightings reported on the internet that turn out to be hoaxes.

In a news release, Beth urges Wheatland area residents to use caution and report anything suspicious.
