(WGTD)---The man shot and killed by a Caledonia police officer Sunday evening may have been staying in the home where the shooting occurred without the permission of the property owners.
The Racine Journal Times talked to a neighbor who said she was in charge of taking in the mail while the homeowners were away on vacation. She said she saw a video taken by the property owners' granddaughter of the man--38-year-old Jared Nelson--in the home when he wasn't supposed to be.
Nelson was killed in a confronation with an officer who was dispatched to the home on a report of a burglary in progress. Before he was shot, Nelson purportedly went after the officer with an "edged" weapon.
The officer, described as a four-year veteran of the force, was treated for a head injury and released from the hospital. He wasn't identified at a press briefing Monday.
The connection between Nelson and the homeowners--if there is one-- isn't clear.
Nelson doesn't appear to have much of a criminal history. He was convicted in 2004 of disorderly conduct, according to online records.
