Kenosha Velosport Riders Heading to National Championships

June 5, 2019  11:15am

(WGTD)---While Kenoshans embrace and support mainstream sports like football, baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey---the community also embraces a not-so-mainstream sport---bike racing. One of Kenosha’s long time claims-to-fame is that the city is home to the oldest operating velodrome in the US. The Kenosha Velodrome---on Washington Road---has been in operation since 1927. Kenosha Velosport Cycling---which practices and rides on the track every week---is sending a team of young bike riders to Carson, California at the beginning of July to participate in the US Junior Elite Track Cycling Championships. Two of those riders joined Greg Berg on a recent "WGTD Morning Show."

At 17-years-old Mia Scarlato---who goes to Bradford High School---is already a seasoned veteran at track cycling who loves both the competition and making friends. The bikes used for track cycling have only one gear; they have no brakes; and, you cannot coast on them. All those components of track cycling are what eventually drew 17-year-old Tremper High school student Carter Kasianowicz to switch from road racing to track racing. At first he thought the bikes were too dangerous to ride. One of his coaches encouraged him to do some track cycling and he fell in love with it calling it “more fun” than road racing.

The two are pictured here between Mike Riva, a Kenosha Velosport coach, and Mia's mother Jennifer Scarlato.

The team will be holding some fundraisers to help defray the costs of the California trip. The team’s website is www.kvcycling.com.
