Geneva Lake Beach Conditions Improve in Time for Holiday Weekend

(WGTD)---Beaches on Geneva Lake in Walworth County are expected to be open for the holiday weekend following closures due to concern over the toxic blue-green algae.

Blue-green algae is always present in at least small amounts in bodies of water, but it's growth can be exacerbated by high levels of nutrients coupled with calm water conditions, according to D-N-R water expert Gina LaLiberte.

Beach closures on Geneva Lake started occurring around Aug. 23rd, with reports that blue-green algae blooms appeared to be trapped in pockets of weeds that were washing up on shorelines.

The concern abated in recent days. But LaLiberte said beachgoers should always be on guard for funky looking water before jumping in. "Always observe the conditions for yourself and if it looks questionable when in doubt stay out," she says.

Exposure to blue green algae can lead to respiratory, flu-like symptoms and skin rashes. Pets and small children are particularly susceptible," LaLiberte said.
