Former City Alderperson Voted in to County Board Over Some Objections

(WGTD)---Kenosha County Board Chair Monica Yuhas’ appointment to fill a vacant board seat turned out to be somewhat controversial. In the end, the board voted Tuesday night to seat former city alderperson
Julia Robinson, but not before some supervisors complained that Robinson’s political views were dissimilar to those of the person whom she was succeeding, conservative Brian Thomas.

Supervisor Eric Meadows was among those who spoke against the appointment. "She seems like a partisan pick for a position that we've been reminded is non-partisan," he said. "But we have to remember that people of District 5 have voted on somebody, Supervisor Thomas, based on their shared values they have with him."

But Supervisor John Franco said for one thing it’s his recollection that the people of the district have a history of voting for candidates who espouse a variety of ideologies. For another, as if it mattered for the non-partisan position, Franco said he couldn’t say for sure just which way Robinson leans. "I get the impression there are a lot of people on the board who have already pigeon-holed Ms. Robinson's political and ideological views," he said. "I spoke to her as well and it's not clear to me what her supposed liberal views or positions are."

The vote to approve Robinson’s appointment was 12-6 with one abstention.

Voters in the district will have a say whether Robinson retains the seat in next year’s spring election.
