(WGTD)---Outgoing Kenosha School Board member Todd Battle joins those former board members who’ve said that getting elected to the board was a bit of an eye-opening experience.
Battle is stepping down next month after having served six years.
Speaking on a recent edition of WGTD’s Education Matters program, Battle said he was surprised by what he termed “the velocity and volume” of issues that went before the school board. "I guess I was a little bit overwhelmed by the number of issues on a day-in, day-out basis when you're talking about a school district with the size and diversity and complexity of an entity like KUSD," he said.
Battle had somewhat of a unique view of the district. His wife is a KUSD teacher while his daughters are enrolled in the system.
Program host Karin Sconzert asked Battle to identify the top misconception that the public may have of KUSD. "I think that sometimes there's this underlying perception that a large, public, urban, diverse school system does not provide the quality of education that maybe people could get from a smaller, private or parochial school. I think that's a perception. I definitely don't think it's a reality," Battle said.
Battle became a school board member while serving as president of the Kenosha Area Business Alliance. He has since moved on to a new job with a real estate development firm.
