Animal Shelter Building Projects in Mt. Pleasant, Kenosha & Salem Lakes

March 9, 2020 12:55p

(WGTD)---The two animal shelters that serve the Kenosha and Racine areas are expanding and remodeling.

Safe Harbor in Kenosha is securing permits and finalizing designs for a major expansion.  Adolfo Dorta says their dog area has remained much the same since 1980 when it was developed.  While the number of kennels—42—is expected to stay the same, each will be larger and more comfortable.

Meanwhile, Angela Speed of the Racine Campus of the Wisconsin Humane Society says they’re in the process of building a new facility in Mt. Pleasant that will be 16-thousand square feet or twice the size of the current location.

Both Dorta and Speed say while the numbers of animals they serve have remained fairly steady, the shelters are finding that those arriving at their shelters have greater health or behavioral needs.

The work of area animal shelters was featured on a recent edition of Community Matters.

The program includes information on a third shelter. Alive Rescue of Chicago is expanding into Salem Lakes in western Kenosha County with a facility that can house up to 30 dogs at a time.  They’ll also accommodate cats and rabbits.  The facility is expected to break ground on its 70-acre property next month.
