The Pike River in Kenosha County is getting some short and long term help.
Coming up this weekend is the annual river clean-up that's sponsored by the Kenosha Sportfishing and Conservation Association, in conjunction with Kenosha County Parks and other partners.
Over the past six years, volunteers have pulled all kinds of trash and debris from the river, including tires, lawn mowers, computers and rugs. The workers also remove log jams in a bid to improve the river's flow.
Long-term help for the Pike is coming from a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It'll be used to improve a one-and-a-half-mile stretch as it runs through Petrifying Springs Park.
The goal is to reduce runoff and improve water quality.
The project is expected to begin next spring.
In regards to this weekend's clean-up, which will take place Saturday, people interested in volunteering are asked to call 262-620-1680 for details.
