(WGTD)---Some major changes are in the wind at UW-Parkside as the school looks to increase enrollment, save money and better serve students and the community.
Parkside Chancellor Lynn Akey—who has been on the job for a little over a year—spoke about the changes on WGTD’s Morning Show this week.
For one thing, Parkside wants to create new internship opportunities with businesses and industries. "It can also be things like sponsored projects or research," Akey said. "We've had several partnerships in that way where a company says 'I've got a challenge. I need some expertise. Do you have a faculty member with this kind of expertise and a crew of students who can come?'"
UW-P will also offer customized training and professional development, she said.
An executive director to lead the initiative is expected to be appointed this spring.
The initiative is reminiscent of Gateway Technical College’s Business and Workforce Solutions department that’s been providing customized training and other services for several decades.
Also discussed by Akey on the Morning Show…an effort to restructure the school itself with an eye toward reducing administrative costs, and the creation of a work group to articulate barriers that limit the success of working students and identify course and service offerings in relation to student needs.
