The Mount Pleasant Village Hall was packed to overflowing for a meeting to discuss issues related to severe bluff erosion along Lake Michigan that is threatening nearly a dozen homes in the village, along with others in the neighboring villages of Caledonia and Somers. People from as far away as Grafton listened to presentations, and asked questions of state and federal officials during the nearly 3 hour meeting.
Martye Griffin of the DNR said because of the seriousness of the situation, the agency is allowing affected property owners to take short-term emergency action without getting a state permit---but---long-term measures are still to come and may be different. Several speakers said they felt funding or other monetary assistance should be made available, BUT Julie Anderson, Racine County's Public Works and Development Services Director, said it just isn't available.
Mount Pleasant Chairman Jerry Garsky assured the crowd that government agencies, from the village to the federal level, are working together to deal with the issue as quickly as possible.
