(WGTD)---Egg prices are coming down as cases of bird flu lessen. But wholesale prices are still three times higher than what they were just last October.
Frank’s Diner in downtown Kenosha is one eatery that uses a lot of eggs—over 700 on an average Saturday or Sunday. Those eggs go into everything from omelettes to pancakes to breads to Frank’s famous Garbage Plate.
For about a month, Frank’s has had in place an egg ‘up charge’, according to what Frank’s co-owner Julie Rittmiller told Wisconsin Today co-host Kate Archer Kent. Dishes that use one egg are a dollar higher; 2-3 eggs translate to a $2 surcharge and for Frank's famous 'Garbage Plate'--where five eggs are used--the added fee is $3.
Rittmiller said the surcharge is preferable to raising prices on all menu items.
Most customers understand. "We've actually only had one full-on complaint and a couple of people just questioning it," she said on a Wisconsin Today segment focusing on egg prices.
Rittmiller says she’s hoping that they’ll eventually be able to lift the egg surcharge but doesn’t know when.
