RUSD Superintendent Lolli Haws Promises Test Scores Turnaround

Racine Unified Superintendent Lolli Haws says a strategic mistake is responsible for the school district's poor showing on the lastest round of state-mandated standardized tests.

Speaking with host Dwayne Olson on Education Matters over the weekend, Haws said she had directed the schools to focus on another set of tests that are designed to measure student growth instead of the state's new 'Forward' exam.

"Guess what we're doing next year?" Haws asked rhetorically. "We're going to focus on the Forward exam because that's the one they're using to calculate our scores."

Racine Unified’s performance in the ‘Forward’ tests that were administered last spring was the worst of the state’s five major metropolitan areas.

It also was a factor, she says, in the school board limiting her contract extension to just a single year. Haws says she’s confident that the district will perform much better this spring in the next round.
