'Hands Off' Rallies Held Saturday in Racine, Kenosha & Elsewhere

Apr. 5, 2025 8:30p

(WGTD)---Anti-trump rallies were held Saturday across America, including several that were held in the WGTD listening area.

In Racine, several hundred protesters lined both sides of Main St. in front of Monument Square, holding a variety of home-made signs and cheering whenever passing motorists honked.

Democratic State Representative Greta Neubauer of Racine said she believed it was the largest Monument Square demonstration that she'd ever been part of. "The election on Tuesday was a sign to people around the world that Wisconsinites can't be bought and we are unhappy with Donald Trump and Elon Musk," she said. Neubauer--the Assembly's minority leader--referred to Tuesday's election in which conservative state Supreme Court candidate Brian Schimel lost to liberal Susan Crawford by 10 points. Donald Trump had carried the state five months earlier by less than a point.

The first two people WGTD News spoke with Saturday said they had never before attended a political event. "This is the first one I've ever gone to. It's that important," said Margaret Martin, 64, of Racine. "We have lost our democracy. There's been a soft coup. It's scary. The things they are doing--shipping people out of the country without due process. It's just frightening."

Racine business owner Denis Navratil, who was minding his Main St. shop about a block away, wasn't quite as concerned. Navratil voted for Trump and remains a supporter, although he did have one concern: Tariffs. "I like free trade. We benefit from free trade," he said. "I think Trump knows that but at this moment it doesn't look like it. I hope he knows what he's doing and it's just a negotiating tactic and that when all is said and done our tariffs will be lower than they were before and trade barriers will be reduced."

In addition to Racine, 'Hands Off' rallies--as what they were called by organizers--were held in Kenosha, Union Grove, Twin Lakes and Walworth.
