Keeping a major campaign promise---Racine Mayor Cory Mason has vetoed a $55 million appropriation to fund construction of a downtown arena and convention center.
An attempt to override the veto is expected to be made at Tuesday night's city council meeting.
Proponents of the proposal---including former interim Mayor Dennis Wiser---say the event center would create jobs and serve as a catalyst for downtown development. Mayor Mason believes the project is too risky and doesn’t make good financial sense.
In order to override, proponents will need to muster support from two-thirds of the council. That translates to 10 votes. Arena-related measures that have gone to the council in the past have consistently won with just that many votes. Mason is hoping he'll be able to change some minds.
