Efforts to Revive Him Fail
Kenosha---An 18 year-old man drowned after he tried to swim to a Lake Michigan breakwater Monday evening.
According to a news release from police, the man and a friend jumped in from the north pier in a bid to swim to the breakwater that protects the harbor entrance from the northeast. The man encountered difficulty with the strong currents and went under. The friend was able to make it back to the pier safely.
A bystander jumped in to save the first man but couldn't reach him and had to abandon the effort.
Police, firefighters, the Coast Guard and the Kenosha County Dive Team were summoned to the scene at about 6:30.
Would-be rescuers discovered the body after about 45 minutes of searching. The victim was rushed to shore, where paramedics carried him to a waiting rescue squad and started performing CPR in what would be an unsuccessful attempt to revive him.
The victim's name wasn't released.
The pier on Monday evening was to have been the scene of a musical event with a performance by Kenoshan Ben Woods. But he announced on social media that the event had to be canceled due to what he described as a "freak accident."
