(WGTD)---The fears held by some supporters of conservative Kenosha School Board member Eric Meadows that the board majority was trying to force him out didn’t materialize Thursday night.
The board voted to appoint Meadows to a one-year-term as part of a process to rectify an election notice mistake by declaring a vacancy that initially cost Meadows his seat.
Before the appointment, the board posed pre-written questions to Meadows and the only other applicant, former board member Carl Bryan.
In a voice vote, the only objection to appointing Meadows came from Board President Yolanda Adams, who said Bryan did a better job of answering questions.
Board member Mary Modder voted with the majority. "I've known Mr. Bryan for most of his life and I have great admiration for him," said board member Mary Modder. "This was an unfortunate mistake that I think we're rectifying the best we can and no it wasn't political. I would be happy to have him stay on the board with us," she said.
It’s not clear whether Meadows views Thursday night's appointment to a one-year term as legitimate. Earlier in the day, Meadows appeared with an attorney on a national Fox News program to indicate that he plans to fight. The board appointment gives Meadows another year for a total of two, at which time Meadows would have to run for re-election, according to current board thinking. Meadows made clear during Thursday night's questioning that he's not happy about that, declaring that he has no plans to run for re-election next year because in his view he doesn't have to.
Thursday night's meeting was held virtually after Adams on Monday night refused to convene a scheduled in-person session because some in the audience displayed campaign signs.
Meadows didn't immediately respond to an email request for comment Thursday night.
