(WGTD)---Cost-cutting is underway at Carthage College, and professors and programs are on the chopping block.
Nothing is final, but administration has said that between 10 and 20 percent of the teaching staff could be laid off. Three departments could be eliminated—classics, philosophy and the “Great Ideas” program. Other departments are in line for restructuring.
Even though the number of incoming students this fall is expected to set a record, the school still can’t keep up with rising expenses. And it’s also looking at a shrinking demographic of high school seniors.
Students, alumni and staff are up in arms.
A Facebook page has been formed. One result has been a 16-page proposal suggesting dozens of ways of saving money that don’t result in the elimination of teaching positions.
According to one Facebook post, non-teaching staff has already been cut by 20% .
The school’s governing body is expected to make some final decisions in the coming weeks.
