Carthage Names a High School "Drop-Out" as it's Next President

The new president of Carthage College has impeccable academic credentials. But John Swallow jokes that he’s also a high school dropout.

Swallow, who currently serves as provost of a small liberal arts college in Tennessee, explains that he enrolled in college full-time at the age of 15 after taking advanced courses and skipping some lower-level classes in high school.

Swallow eventually got his undergraduate degree, but never picked up that high school diploma. "I was told I had no where near enough credits to graduate," Swallow said in a WGTD interview Tuesday. "That's where we left that one," Swallow chuckled.

Swallow’s appointment as Carthage’s new president was announced Tuesday.

For the record, Swallow's degrees include a pair of master's and a doctorate, all from Yale.
