Racine Gas Station Homicide Leads to 30-Year Prison Term for a Codefendant

Feb. 27, 2024 noon

(WGTD)---A Racine man who fatally shot another just because he was a rival gang member was given a 30-year prison term Tuesday.

Obie Glover was 16 in 2021 when he and David Luckett fired guns at near point-blank range outside of the Marathon Gas station on Rapids Drive that killed Deveon Robbins.

"You ask for another chance," said Judge Robert Repischak just before passing the sentence. "Your chances are gone," he said.

Seconds later, with the handwriting on the wall, several onlookers in the gallery started to sob.

Repischak, noting that Glover had already picked up three felony convictions at the time of the fatal shooting, described Glover as a "very dangerous" individual.

But even the prosecutor in the case, Antoinette Rich, described the matter as sad all the way around.

According to Rich and defense attorney Jamie McClendon, Glover had been living with older siblings after his mother moved out of state. Glover's father had little contact with the family.

Glover's mother hung up on defense attorney McClendon who had called to see whether she'd like to discuss her son's case. The woman, according to McClendon's assessment, didn't appear to understand the responsibility of parenting.

When it was his turn to speak, Glover apologized, describing himself as a "naive' 16-year-old with no positive role model. He also said he was a changed person after having sat in jail for three years awaiting resolution of the case.

Glover initially had been charged with 1st Degree Intentional Homicide, but was allowed to plead guilty to a charge of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide after saying he thought the victim had fired a gun, even though a video of the incident showed that co-defendant Luckett has fired first and that Robbins had his hands in his pockets the whole time.

Repischak's 30-year sentence was 10 years short of the maximum.

Luckett's case is pending.
