(WGTD)---It’s going to take a deep dive into Racine County’s election reporting software to figure out what went wrong Tuesday night.
Speaking to WGTD’s David Cole Thursday, Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen said the normal reporting out process was put on hold Tuesday night as soon as some discrepancies in vote totals were discovered. "We had some uncontested candidates and the write-in count was very high," she said. "Something was not correctly accumulating those totals," she said.
Christensen made the decision to stop posting vote totals on the county’s website. Instead, poll workers were instructed to phone in the numbers and, as they usually would, deliver the individual polling place data the next day to the clerk’s office.
It wasn’t until late in the day on Wednesday that totals in all of the races were finally provided.
Christensen said the manufacturer of the county’s voting system—Dominion—is unaware of any similar problems having occurred with other clients. They’ll be tearing apart Racine County’s system in search of the problem’s cause, she said.
How do you prevent such a thing from occurring again? "First we have to review to find out how it happened to make sure it doesn't happen again," Christensen said.
The county’s election system is six years old.
A statement issued Thursday night by the county executive's office said the county is fully committed to resolving the issue and "ensuring the reliability of our electoral system moving forward."
