Racine Council President John Tate May Be Moving On

Oct. 11, 2022 9a

(WGTD)---It appears as if the Racine City Council will be losing its president.

WISC-TV in Madison reports that John Tate is on the verge of being hired by Madison to serve as that city’s first Independent Police Monitor.

The proposed contract calls for Tate to establish residency in Madison within the first eight months of employment. Tate would start December 1st and be paid $125,000 annually.

The lifelong Racine resident is a social worker by trade who has served on the city council since 2017.

He was appointed chair of the state’s Parole Commission, but wasn’t required to move out of Racine.

He ran into a whirlwind of controversy earlier this year when the commission granted parole to a 54-year-old man who killed his wife in 1997.

Gov. Evers asked Tate to rescind the decision, which he did. Evers later asked him to resign, which he also did.

As Madison’s Independent Police Monitor, Tate will review incidents in which force is used and will oversee the processing of citizen complaints, according to WISC.
