(WGTD)---The boycott of Racine City Council meetings by six of its members appears to be over.
Meeting Thursday night, the Council’s Executive Committee approved two of three proposals that proponents said were intended to strike a better balance of power between the mayor and council.
Assurances were given that all three proposals will be placed on next Tuesday’s council meeting agenda for formal votes by the full body—something that the boycotters were seeking.
The most significant set of ordinance changes—a series of proposals designed to bring all matters back to the council floor for final disposition—was recommended for approval on a vote that was unanimous, and counter to the wishes of Mayor Cory Mason.
Mason said the process that currently exists is the most efficient way to handle city business. But the argument fell on deaf ears.
No matter what happens Tuesday night, the mayor still retains his veto power. 10 council votes would be needed to override. There are 15 seats, although one is currently vacant.
Thursday night's committee session took place in a packed meeting room.
