KUSD "Rightsizing" Committee to Hold Initial Meeting Wednesday Night

June 26, 2023 3:50p

(WGTD)---A committee that’s been formed to work with a consultant on potential school closings in Kenosha is expected to meet for the first time this week.

Speaking on WGTD’s Education Matters program Saturday, KUSD Superintendent Jeff Weiss reiterated his desire to preserve programs rather than half-empty school buildings. "I'd rathr be using our revenue on programs for students as opposed to heating buildings that are partially filled," he said. "I want the community to understand that we want to preserve the high levels of support and services that we have for our students."

The "Ad Hoc Citizen Advisory Rightsizing Committee will meet for the first time Wednesday at 5:30 in the Educational Support Center.

Kenosha Unified’s enrollment has dropped by some 4,000 students since peaking at around 23,000 in 2012. Additional declines are forecast.

The district already closed one low-enrollment elementary…that being Wilson Elementary. No decisions have been made on the future of the building itself.

Weiss said the committee and consultant are expected to focus on the elementary and middle school buildings.
