(WGTD)---Kenosha Unified has rolled out a survey in preparation of consideration of an operating referendum to stave off the need for an estimated $19 million in cuts for the 2025-2026 budget year.
The survey, which takes between 10-15 minutes to fully fill out, is available online. It explains the need for a referendum, and asks for residents' opinions on three possible referendum question scenarios, using a home assessed at $250,000 as an example.
The first option would authorize a $19 million expenditure above levy limits. That option would result in a $261 tax increase.
The second option calls for approval of a $28 million referendum with an accompanying tax increase of $394.
The third option would result in a $482 tax increase if $34 million would be levied beyond state limits.
In the last several years, dozens of school districts in the state have gone the referendum route as a way of staying afloat.
The Kenosha School Board is looking at putting a referendum on the ballot next spring.
