Kenosha County Officials Wrap Up Work on Next Year's Budget With No Dissent

Nov. 12, 2023 8:30p

(WGTD)---The process of coming up with a budget for Kenosha County government was a lot smoother this year than last.

Kenosha County Executive Samantha Kerkman signed the 2024 blueprint late last week after the county board voted unanimously in favor of the final version after making just a few changes in what Kerkman had originally proposed.

Last year, a budget stalemate raised the possibility of layoffs and service cuts. It had come about when a bonding resolution failed to get support from three-quarters of the board, throwing a monkey wrench into the county operations as a whole.

Members of the minority had been upset over what they viewed as the needless layoffs of two public works department employees and the de-funding of a UW-Extension position.

The crisis was averted when a compromise was announced.

This year's budget calls for a slight decrease in property taxes for county purposes on a home whose assessed value remains the same over last year.
