Kenosha City Administrator John Morrissey Plans to Run for County Board

Dec. 10, 2023 9:15a

(WGTD)---On the list of candidates running for a seat on the Kenosha County Board, there's one name in particular that you wouldn't expect to see: That of Kenosha City Administrator John Morrissey.

Morrissey has officially declared his candidacy in the county board's 9th district. It's an area in the city that runs south of Roosevelt Rd. and west of 30th Ave. The seat is currently held by John O'Day, who's stepping down after serving for 27 years. As of Friday, no one else has expressed a formal interest in the county board position.

Morrissey tells WGTD that he thinks he can add an independent voice to the board, which has seen a recent increase in partisan politics.

He also believes his service would create an additional conduit between the county and city. "I believe that it will be a benefit to the City and the County for hopefully some communication, cooperation and collaboration on projects with each entity," he said.

Morrissey is a retired Kenosha police chief who has served as city administrator for the past three years.

He plans to continue in that role until July of 2025, in part to easy the transition between outgoing Mayor John Antaramian and the next mayor who'll be elected this spring.

Morrissey says he's in the process of collecting signatures. The filing deadline is Jan. 2.
