Avian Flu is Detected in a Poultry Flock in Western Kenosha County

Dec. 18, 2024 2:20p

(WGTD)---A case of bird flu has popped up in Kenosha County, the second such case in Wisconsin since January, according to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Traces of Avian Influenza turned up in a "backyard poultry flock" in the south west corner of the county, according to the department.

Birds on the property will be "depopulated," and a 10 kilometer control area has been established around the site to prevent the movement of poultry on or off any property.

State and local health officials are monitoring exposed farm workers for symptoms of the disease, which include a sore throat, fever, muscle aches, a cough and eye infections.

According to the state Department of Health Services, the virus does not spread easily from animals to people. People who have gotten sick with bird flu have been in direct contact with infected animals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed 58 cases of avian flu in people across the country this year.
