Kenosha Casino Up for City Council Vote

Nov. 7, 2023 8:20p

From WGTD News:

Plans for a casino and hotel complex to be built off of I-94 in Kenosha County are expected to advance a step Thursday night. At a special meeting, the Kenosha City Council is expected to approve a lengthy agreement between the Menominee Indian Tribe and the city that’s comparable to a revenue-sharing deal that was approved years ago when a casino proposal first surfaced. That plan died when then Gov. Walker refused to sign off on it. The resurrected proposal—unveiled last year—now involves, in addition to the Menominees, the Seminole Indian Tribe which owns the Hard Rock International. The proposed Kenosha casino includes a 150-room hotel, several restaurants, a ballroom and a performance venue. In 1998, voters in the city of Kenosha endorsed a casino by a 14-point margin. A similar referendum, this one including the entire county, passed by a comparable margin in 2004. In order for a Kenosha casino to become a reality, approvals must be obtained from both the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Gov. Evers.

A social worker has been accused of smuggling things into the Racine County Jail where she worked as a contract employee. 36-year-old Brittany Perez is now an inmate in the jail herself, awaiting her first court appearance and the filing of formal charges. According to a news release from the sheriff’s department, Perez and an inmate, 33-year-old Andrew Crutcher, had a relationship. In Crutcher’s cell jailers purportedly recovered a cell phone, pills, a lighter, tobacco, rolling papers, a makeshift smoking pipe and two razors. An examination of Crutcher’s phone uncovered calls and text messages between the two and inappropriate photos. In one message, Perez purportedly promised to deliver cigarettes. Crutcher is facing new charges himself, along with another inmate found to be in possession of contraband. That inmate purportedly tried to flush a cell phone down the toilet, but when that didn’t work, he reportedly tried to bend it. It was found in a trash bag.
