(WGTD)---The 29-year-old Kenosha man who was shot by a police officer as he tried to get into his vehicle Sunday night had in his possession a knife, according to the state Justice Dept.

A knife was recovered from the driver's side floorboard, according to a news release. And it goes on to say that Jacob Blake admitted during questioning that he did in fact have a knife.

The incident set off rounds of destructive and deadly protests in Kenosha. Protesters--and others--were infuriated by a video that showed an officer grabbing Blake's shirt as he tried to get in, then shooting him in the back.

The release identified the officer as Rusten Sheskey, a seven-year veteran of the department.

Police responded to a residence in the 2800 blk of 40th St. after a woman called to say her boyfriend was inside, but wasn't supposed to be.

Police tried to arrest Blake. An unsuccessful taser attempt preceded the shooting.

At last report, Blake was paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors weren't sure if the condition was permanent or temporary.

Online court records indicate that at the time of the shooting Blake had an outstanding warrant stemming from a domestic violence incident.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating, and is expected to present a report to the district attorney for a charging decision within 30 days.

The three officers who were on the call have been placed on administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation.
