(WGTD)--The City of Racine is trying a new tactic that’s designed to curb reckless driving and speeding.
The first speed ‘hump’ is scheduled to be installed Thursday. With accompanying signage, the slightly-raised platform will be put in place on Michigan Blvd. near busy North Beach.
'Humps’ are not to be confused with speed ‘bumps’, which protrude further above the concrete.
According to a news release from the city, humps can be effective at reducing speeds by nearly 10 miles per hour.
Thursday's installation is part of a city council-authorized pilot program. The city is working on a policy to allow residents to request speed humps in their neighborhoods.
The humps will be removed at the end of the warm-weather season so as not to interfere with snow and ice removal.
