(WGTD)---A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Shalom Center Friday for the 10,500 sq. ft. addition that is enabling Kenosha's main shelter for the homeless to add services.
A large overflow crowd packed the room for comments from Shalom Center Director Tamarra Coleman.
The $2.4 million addition is dubbed the Hope Hub.
Speaking recently on Community Matters, Coleman explained that the new addition will serve as a resource center and referral service. "When I say connect, I don't mean hand them a brochure and say call this number," Coleman explained. "It'll be coming into the office and sitting down and 'let's navigate the waters with you.' And it will look different for each person. We have to start serving people in a different way."
The Hope Hub includes clothes washers and dryers and showers. Office space is being offered to various social service agencies. It's also expected to serve as a cooling and warming center when conditions warrant.
