(WGTD)---A food distribution center in Kenosha doesn’t want to just warehouse food, it wants to have a hand in growing some of it.
Gordon Food Service is proposing to build a stand-a-lone, 9,000 square foot building that’ll be dedicated to growing a variety of greens and herbs, indoors.
Gordon has partnered with Square Roots, a company that in Plan Commission documents is described as a leader in indoor, urban farming.
According to an old news release, the first indoor farm that was built as a result of the partnership popped up near Gordon's corporate headquarters in Michigan in 2019. The idea was to offer fresh, locally grown produce year-around. The Michigan facility was to have been a template for Gordon's two-dozen distribution centers in Canada and the eastern U.S.
According to Kenosha Plan Commission documents, the proposed Kenosha facility would be built in part with metal shipping containers, stacked two rows high, ten containers wide. The Commission will take a look at the proposal at its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday.
A Gordon Food Service spokesperson did not want to comment on the Kenosha proposal until approvals were received.
Gordon's distribution center in Kenosha is located northwest of the Kenosha Regional Airport.
