Familiar Face to More Than Likely Return to Racine City Council

Jan. 7, 2024 11:15a

(WGTD)---Barring a successful write-in challenge, former Racine Alderperson Sandy Weidner will return to the city council.

Weidner was the only candidate to meet Friday's extended filing deadline for a spot on the April ballot in the 6th district. The Tuesday deadline was extended because the alderman of the district, Jeff Peterson, failed to file a non-candidacy statement on time.

Weidner spent 20 years on the council before deciding against a re-election bid in 2020.

Weidner, however, remained in the public eye as the result of a lingering open records lawsuit that she had filed against city administration. Weidner won that battle at the state Court of Appeals.

In an email to WGTD, City Clerk Tara McMenamin said another individual had filed before the Friday deadline but the papers lacked the required number of nominating petition signatures.
